Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.

ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.

Where will Viagra be on sale?

The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.

The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.

Who can buy Viagra over the counter?

Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.

The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.

A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.

Who will still need a prescription?

Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.

How much will Viagra cost?

A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.

Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.

Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.

Is there a limit to how many tablets can be bought?

The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.

Why has Viagra been made available over the counter?

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.

Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.

“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Why is Viagra sold as a pill?

Viagra, produced by Bayer Healthcare, contains the active ingredient sildenafil, the same ingredient found in a

drug called Viagra.

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in the medication Viagra.

Bayer also said sildenafil was sold under the name Viagra, which means the same thing as Viagra but for men with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.

Sales of the little blue pill in March totaled $2.06 billion, up 15% from the same period last year. Revenue fell 4% to $2.07 billion.

Viagra's maker, Pfizer, said the pill sold by Bayer could help treat patients who have been struggling with erectile dysfunction, including those who have to get up each day to take sex toys.

"Bayer, a leader in the field of pharmaceuticals, is pleased to report that it has passed regulatory standards that ensure it is adhering to consumer safety and efficacy information," the company said in a statement.

Sales of the little blue pill are expected to exceed $1 billion this year, up from $1 billion in the year to be exact.

Viagra, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, has faced criticism from doctors, sexual performance fans and the public for some time. Viagra sales were down 2% to $2.16 billion, but the drug has since been pulled from the market.

This April, the FDA issued a warning that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs should be sold to men only under the brand names Pfizer and Eli Lilly.

Viagra was developed by Bayer in response to the European Union's patent dispute law. It protects against patent invalidation and other infringements due to unexpected circumstances.

Lilly has also faced a similar prohibition in the United States, which was triggered by a ruling of the FDA in 2001 by a company seeking to invalidate a patent for its Viagra product Cialis.

Bayer has argued that the patent protection is based on a principle that Viagra's patent covering Cialis is valid, not against patent law.

Viagra is manufactured by Bayer Healthcare, which in 2007 patented its Viagra patent.

In 1998, the patent protected Bayer's Viagra from invalidation by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. It expired in March 2003, paving the way for generics in 2003.

There is little doubt that Bayer has patents covering Viagra. In April 1998, the FDA approved Eli Lilly's Cialis, a drug for erectile dysfunction.

In June 2003, Lilly's patent covering Viagra expired in the United States.

Lilly argued that Viagra is protected by a unique formula, a principle set by the patent.

The FDA decision, in part, is due to a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1999 that required the company to disclose the formula in an initial patent application. The patent disclosed the formula as a whole to the FDA in 2001.

The FDA ruling sparked debate within the pharmaceutical industry about the efficacy of Viagra, including whether the patent could be invalidated by a private citizen.

Viagra's patent protection had been a major barrier to approval for a number of years.

Viagra sales rose 16% to $2.06 billion in March, up 15% from the same period in 1999, the FDA's announcement said.

Sales of the little blue pill increased by 11%, the FDA's announcement said.

Bayer also reiterated it would appeal the ruling.
